The National Portrait Gallery houses just under a thousand portraits of Queen Elizabeth II, including some of the most treasured and famous official portraits of the monarch captured at historical moments, as well as day-to-day images of the monarch at home and with family, following her journey from childhood to princess and Queen, mother and grandmother.
This publication highlights the Gallery's collection's most important portraits of Elizabeth II. Paintings and photographs dating from Elizabeth II's birth to the present day will take readers on a visual journey through the life of Britain's most famous icon.
This book reflects on the Queen's life and includes family photographs alongside important formal portraits to explore how, as her reign grew longer and longer, she became an iconic figure in modern British culture and history. The book includes works by artists who have depicted the Queen from 1926 to the present day, such as Baron, Cecil Beaton, Dorothy Wilding, Patrick Lichfield, Andy Warhol, Annie Leibovitz, and David Bailey.
An introductory essay by Alexandra Shulman explores how the collected portraits depict the Queen throughout her life and reign, as well as a timeline of key historical events and moments in Elizabeth II's life, which are included in this book.
