Over a five year period, many of the leading botanical artists from around the world visited Southern Transylvania and painted specimens of wildflowers growing in the countryside around His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales’s properties at Viscri in The Saxon Villages and the more remote Zalanpatak.

Traditional farming methods have allowed a wide range of flora to flourish in this idyllic unspoilt landscape of hay-meadows, pastures and woods. Among the species painted are Clematis, Crocus, Gentian, Hellebore, Hepatica, Orchid and Violet.

A selection panel ensured that each of the 124 watercolours met the highest standard and it is from these paintings that The Transylvania Florilegium is now being published. Each plate is printed by lithography in England, at actual size and on especially-made archival paper. Introductory information and text for each depicted watercolour, including scientific botanical detail and where and when the illustrated material was found, is included. The Florilegium is presented in two luxurious volumes, hand-bound in leather and marbled paper with tooling in gold leaf.

The edition is limited to 150 numbered sets, the first of which is assigned to His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales who has written the Preface and kindly agreed to sign each copy. A list of subscribers to the Transylvania Florilegium will be included in Volume II.
