This two-day course, hosted by Brian Crossley, is aimed at those new to chair caning or with some basic craft experience. It is suitable for those who make new furniture and those with a restoration project in mind.

Brian Crossley, MBE, a second-generation Chair Caner who has practiced the craft for over 60 years and teaches in various locations, will teach you in a small group of up to 8 people.

Working on a pre-made frame representing a typical chair seat, you will be taught the ‘6-way pattern’ used on 95% of all caned furniture.

Day One

The first day of the workshop starts with a presentation and discussion that provide participants with a solid understanding of the history of caning and the various materials, tools, techniques, and patterns involved in the craft.

Following this introduction, participants will engage in the practical part of the workshop. All necessary materials and comprehensive course notes will be supplied, along with any required tools.

Caning a frame can be performed while seated, and to facilitate handling, it will be secured in an adjustable clamp attached to a table.

Safety is a top priority. We will implement all necessary measures to ensure the safe use of hand tools, and participants will be supervised at all times.   

Day Two

Continue caning the frame as on day one. If time permits, weave an alternative pattern on another smaller frame. The completed frame(s) and notes can be retained.
