Hand embroidery specialist Laura Baverstock is set to host a two-day masterclass at Highgrove estate in partnership with The Prince’s Foundation on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 December.
Goldwork is the art of embroidery worked in gold, silver or gilt-metal threads and wires. The technique dates back at least 2,000 years and has been found throughout ancient civilisations across the globe.
During The Golden Butterfly: A Masterclass in Goldwork, participants will gain knowledge of a variety of goldwork metal threads and their uses and applications, while also learning design transfer techniques, sculptural padding, finishing techniques and how to prepare hoops for display.
Laura’s bespoke artwork and designs are held in private collections around the world and have been featured in several blockbuster films. In 2016, she was awarded the honour of becoming one of the first Trade Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre in recognition of her craft and support of traditional goldwork.
Building on the success of the Future Textiles training initiative at Dumfries House that created the Modern Artisan Programme in partnership with Yoox Net-A-Porter, The Prince’s Foundation announced earlier this year that Future Textiles will be extended to Highgrove. From 2022, learners at the Gloucestershire site will hone their skills in production and draw on the inspiration of Highgrove Gardens in the design of products and garments.
