The King's Foundation would like to invite local green-fingered enthusiasts to play their part in caring for our greenspace as they roll out their established garden volunteering programme.
The programme has proven successful at the charity's sister sites, The Castle of Mey and Dumfries House, giving participants the opportunity to spend time in beautiful greenspace, learn from horticulture professionals, and perform an active role in maintaining gardens that welcome thousands of visitors each year.
At The Castle of Mey and Dumfries House, volunteers include semi-retired and retired men and women. At the latter, The King's Foundation's headquarters in East Ayrshire, volunteer members of Things Tae Dae, a nearby additional support needs group, spend every Friday morning helping with maintenance while learning about gardening and cultivating vegetables.
Melissa Simpson, head of gardens at Dumfries House, said: “The Things Tae Dae group are some of the longest serving volunteers on the estate. The group assisted with clearing the scrub and landscaping The Queen Elizabeth Walled Garden in 2012 and have been here helping us maintain the gardens ever since.
Volunteers do not only have to be just gardeners. The volunteering programme includes garden guides at Highgrove Gardens, plus house guides and visitor services assistants at Dumfries House.
